Rice paper sheets

Rice Paper Sheet

They are super thin wraps made of rice, water and salt that can be filled with anything. Because they are so thin, the cover is almost transparent so you can see what's inside. They also have a wonderful taste to them.

What is Rice Paper Made of ?

Traditionally, rice paper was made from slightly fermented rice flour, water and salt. The cornmeal is removed from a cloth spread over a pot of boiling water into thin circles. The rice leaves (similar to banh cuon) were dried on woven mats. The dried rice paper can be stored and then reused to soften and use. All of this explains the hardness of rice paper, the pattern it is woven into each other, and why you can eat rice paper!

Buying and Storing :

Depending on where you live, you may be lucky enough to find rice paper for sale in the international food aisle of your local health food store. . Otherwise, the best option is to go to a Vietnamese or Chinese food market. Online is also a good option.

How to store rice paper Sheets:

Once the package is opened, place it in a resealable plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator or cupboard.

How to use Rice Paper :

Rice paper is sold as a dry cloth. Before using them, you need to clean them to make them soft. Once rehydrated, the rice paper can be eaten as usual - like summer rolls - or fried. Fresh rolls are the most common way to use rice paper in the kitchen. This is not something we recommend you bake. After all, the rice paper becomes opaque and light.

RICE PAPER VS. SPRING SKIN ROLLS :

Many wheat paper packages are labeled "spring rolls" but be aware that this is a term that is technically applied to Chinese wheat rolls that are from Shanghai; Filipino lumpia is made with the same type of thin wrapper. Viet rice paper has become known as rice rolls even though they are eaten year round!
