Designerplanet. Why Do We Wear Black During Muharram?

Muharram kurti black

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, has deep significance for Muslims around the world, especially the Shiite community. It is a time of mourning and reflection as we commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). As families prepare to commemorate this solemn period, dressing children in black has become a tradition to symbolize mourning and respect. At MiniPosh, we understand the importance of this tradition and have curated a collection of comfortable black dresses for children.

Reason Behind Wearing Black During Muharram

Traditionally, Shia wear black during the month of Muharram. In fact, it is considered Mustahbb (highly recommended) to do so this month. We discovered that most Shias wear black clothing at certain times of the year, including Shia Ulema (scholarships) and Maraje' (higher scholars). In fact, Shiite Ayatollahs tend to wear black all year round, and they are rarely seen without their black cloaks.Shi'ite Muslims cover the walls inside and outside their houses, Mosques, Centers, offices, and even government buildings with black cloth to express their grief and sorrow towards the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him).

The colors that a Shiite may wear during Muharram are black, white, grey, blue, green, turquoise (piroji), and brown (without shades of orange), i.e. sand-brown or black-brown. Some people wear clothes. Off-white too.

Colors that cannot be worn in Muharram are red, orange, maroon, pink, magenta (rani), yellow, orange-brown and purple/voilet with pink tints. Purple can be worn with caution if it is darker and more similar to navy blue. Colors to avoid should also be avoided in embroidery or print patterns. Just as you would wear black clothes, you should not wear pink prints or embroidery work.

Understand the Muharram

Muharram is not only the beginning of the Islamic New Year, but also a period of remembrance and mourning. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is most important as it commemorates the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS). Wearing black during Muharram is a way to express sorrow and solidarity for the suffering and sacrifices of Imam Hussein (AS) and his followers.

Black Dress

Bottom Line

Muharram is an important time to reflect, mourn, and teach our children about the sacrifices of Imam Hussein (AS) and his followers. Dressing our children in black is a meaningful way to honor this tradition. At MiniPosh, we're committed to helping you keep the tradition alive with ease by providing high-quality, comfortable, and stylish black dresses for your little ones.

The Indian Saree- Age old, part of India’s history and culture, the oldest dress form for women in this country.

The Indian Saree does the best portrayal of the desi-indian-girl. An Indian saree has come back with a bang and a boom to the fashion circuit. Shows on ethnicity and designers  have embodied the concepts of style and tradition by creating versions of the Indian Saree. A Sabyasachi saree is different and has a unique quotient to it, while a Satya Paul Saree would be colour-centric and pleasing to the eye that favours colour. Meanwhile you have not so high-end stores selling their special versions of the Indian Saree making it feasible to choose from various options and looks. From looking elegant, to looking hot, to looking basic, to looking stylish, there is a saree for your every requirement for every look.

When Priyanka Chopra Wore the gorgeous Saree in the song Desi-girl from Dostana, it looked sizzling on screen. It literally created a bigger stir than her swimsuit scene of the film. This goes to show that the Indian Saree concept is not drab, and it’s not overtly traditional any longer either.

It has taken a turn and today, the saree is embodied internationally as well. And this is a proud moment for India for having come a long way from having seven yard sarees as the only choice to today, having seventy inch long sarees as well! So, leaving the long and short of it to your style sensibility, here’s a desi-namaste until next time!
