What is a Nauvari saree?

Nauvari saree, also known as the 9-yard sarees, or Lugade Saree has been an essential part of the traditional attire of women in Maharashtra.It is said that every Maharashtrian woman takes pride in her Nauvari sarees. Be it a puja (ritual), a wedding or a festival like Gudi Padwa, Ganeshotsav (Ganesh Chaturthi), Champa Shashti or Narali Poornima, wearing a Nauvari saree is a must for every Marathi woman. Well, this particular saree has a deep meaning in the culture of Maharashtra. A typical Maharashtrian Nauvari saree is 8-9 meters long.

Nauvari saree is deeply embedded in Maharashtrian history and culture. Legend has it that during the Maratha rule, women were entrusted with the responsibility of assisting their male warriors. It was at this time that they introduced this saree, which looks like men's pants when worn. The goal is to facilitate mobility.
