Garad Korial Saree – Worn In Kolkatta At The Time Of Durga Puja

Garad Silk sarees

Garad Korial Silk Saree Durga puja

The word Garad (or Gorod) means white and refers to undyed silk. Such is the Garad silk saree, presented with a plain white or gray body, and the border with an unembellished shade, and the plain Pallav. The most common of Garad sarees have white, red and Pallav body. Garad silk (pronounced Garod) is one of the popular types of sarees. It has its origin in West Bengal. Otherwise known as Gorod, the word Garad means 'white'. Garad silk sarees are known for their red and small paisley motifs. The silk fabric used to weave Garad sarees is colourless. Which keeps the lack of texture flawless. In this way, these sarees have a sacred significance for women in Bengal. Murshidabad region of West Bengal has expertise in weaving these Sarees. In this, the silk threads are woven close to each other which gives the saree a beautiful look. Varieties in the border and Pallav shades of the Garad saree are usually accessible in blue, orange, green, earthy, dark, gold. So on a regular basis, small paisley and floral motifs adorn the edges and Pallav of the Garad saree. However, there is almost no design in the body of the saree.

Garad-Korial Saree: Widely worn in Kolkata at the time of Durga Puja.

Bengali women appreciate the simplicity of these sarees to preserve their sacred quality and wear them in the most perfect fashion.

The Garad Silk and Korial Saree Connect

The Korial Saree is a close alternative to the Garad Silk Saree. West Bengal is a rich state producing a variety of sarees such as Taant cotton sarees, Baluchari Sarees, Dhakai Jamdani sarees, and Batik Sarees, along with Garad silk sarees. However, there is another style of Bengali saree that follows the design and style of the Garad silk saree. It is called Korial sarees. Every Bengali woman wherever in the world she lives, wants to claim a Garad or Korial saree in her wardrobe. The edges of Garad sarees are special in shades, generally red and maroon which gives it a lovely look. Then, the Korial saree (also called Laal Paar sari) is indistinguishable from the Garad saree except for the border which is more distinct in plan and red in shade. The funny thing about Garad saree from Korial saree is that the former has small floral and paisley themes on the length of the saree while the latter is white with red color. The korial saree is generally worn during the Sindoor Khela during Durga Puja.

When we talk about clothes that perfectly combine tradition with modernity, Dhakai Jamdani sarees must be given a lot of space to talk about. From the old Mughal rule, these sarees are a popular type of ethnic wear in the state of Bengal. The material used to make these beautiful sarees is a thin fabric like muslin which is found in Bangladesh.
