Applying Eyeliner

Eyeliner is used to give shape to the eyes and define them as desired. An important part of eye makeup, it is often used after eyeshadow and before mascara. Eyeliner can be used to add the dramatic touch to your face or soften the look of your eyes and must be used, keeping the color of eyes and the eyeshadow that you use in mind. Brown, navy and charcoal liners look gorgeous on light colored eyes while brown and plum shades are often used to enhance the beauty of dark brown and black eyes. Precise and dramatic strokes can be achieved by using liquid eyeliner while pencil eyeliner is the best to give soft touch to the eyes. To experiment with colors, you can moisten a small flat brush to use dark eyeshadow as eyeliner or a cake liner and the brush must be held as a pen. Pencil eyeliners need to be sharpened before using them.

While applying the eyeliner, tilt your head back slightly and keep your eyes half-open to let you see yourself in the mirror as you are applying the liner. The line must be drawn on the upper lid from the inner side of the eye to the outer side. Let the liner dry before opening your eyes fully. To soften the look of harsh eyeliner, smudge it a little using the brush. Lower lid is lined from outer edge tapering to the inner side of the eye. Liquid liner has to be applied in one smooth stroke while pencil is applied by stroking the area lightly. Too thick eyeliner does not look good so go for thinner lines. Liquid liners need practice and brushed must always be washed with a makeup remover after using them. If your hand is shaky, stand close to the mirror to provide it support from the mirror.

While using a powder shadow as a liner, it is wise to hold a tissue directly beneath your eye to avoid it from getting all over the dace. The best tool to apply eyeliner is the sponge applicator. Liner applied as a series of dashes or dots or short feather-like strokes on the lash line are much easier to control than a solid line. If your lids are oily, you need to prepare it first just like you did for eyeshadow to avoid eyeliner from moving up to the crease area. Kohl pencils are ideally suited for the inner rims of the upper and lower lids and not the eyeliner as it soon smears easily and is also not good for eyes.

Classic traditional eyeliner look can be achieved by determining the thickness and intensity of the eyeliner according to the eyelid area. Larger eyelid area can use thicker and softer eyeliner while smaller eyelid area needs thinner and more intense liner. Since eyeliner is meant to create depth to the eyes and give thickness to the lashes, traditionally you can stick with dark brown, gray or black eyeshadow for the upper lid and softer tan, taupe, chestnut, brown, gray or black shades for the lower lid.

How to Buy Lipstick

  • Go to a store that sells reputed brands. You are likely to find a great selection there. Make sure you have a certain color or shade in mind before you start choosing. If you are looking for browns, then go through their collection of brown shades, and so on.
  • Once you have assorted a few shades out for yourself, open one and lift it up till your mouth. See if it suits your face complexion. Avoid using the lipsticks on lips, hands and palms, as it is very unhygienic. If they have testers, just dab a little on the skin behind your palm and check it in sunlight. There is a lot of difference when you check colors in natural and artificial light.
  • Check the ingredients that have been used. Since you tend to lick your lips often, you tend to swallow lipstick too. So, make sure what goes inside is at least harmless, if not palatable!
  • A good thought would be to go in for two different shades all together. It will favor most of your clothes. Buy a brownish or reddish-brown shade for clothes that are beige, black, green, yellow, etc. Get another shade in maroon, mauve or pink (depending on your skin tone) that will compliment dresses that are in blue, pink, white, etc.
  • Don’t buy a lipstick just because the sales assistant thinks it is good! Trust your instincts and love what you buy. In case your lipstick doesn’t stay for a long time or vanishes fast, consider buying a long lasting one.
  • It is better to go in for matt lipsticks than the glossy ones. They last longer and bleed less and even if you want a shiny look, you can always add some natural gloss after applying the lipstick.

Choosing Lip Colors

Be careful while choosing the lip color and try it out in a cosmetic salon first and let them assist you in your color choices. For women with large lips, muted colors such as purples, browns and bronzes are the best choices while women with thinner lips should use light colors. Wine, berry, cappuccino and mauve colors suit light blondes best while coral, apricot and shades of peach are suitable for blondes  that have a golden hue. Warm peach, brown and terracotta shades are for blondes that sport olive skin tones. Redheads may use warm colors such as shades of terracotta, cinnamon and peachy brown while shades such as terracotta, cinnamon and reds with hints of brown are the most suited colors for brunettes.

Make your lipstick smudge resistant and matte by blotting the excess color on lips using one sheet of two-ply tissue, reapplying the lipstick and blotting it again to absorb the excess oils. Mature women should not use matte lipsticks though, for a little gloss can make their lips appear softer and lip liner will keep the lipstick from melting. In case, the lip color or brush slips from your hands accidentally and stains your clothes, apply the glycerine on the area and rub it gently, before washing it as usual. For an instant makeover, try a pink creamy blush to add rosy ness to your cheeks and lids and use plump shade on your lips and you are ready to flaunt your beauty.

A clear lip balm is the best thing for everyday use while sheer application of a colored lip gloss on lips, cheeks and eyes looks quite subtle and sexy. Glitter lipsticks and lip glosses are for special events and funky night parties that highlight your lips immensely. There are lip glosses that literally make your lips plumper and appear fuller and much more luscious. A very light film of pink or red lipstick gives you the look of that carefree beauty that every woman yearns for. Become an attention-grabbing vampiress, who is hot and trendy these days, by using a blood red lip liner to make precise lip lines and apply two coats of lipstick of same color, blotting the extra oil in between with the tissue paper.

Lipsticks contain waxes, oils, pigments and emollients that one must pay attention to for a quality product. Wax gives shape and ease of application to the lipstick and often natural beeswax, carnauba wax made from the leaves of Brazilian wax palm trees and candelilla wax processed from the plant of the same name found in Mexico is used for the purpose. Oils and fats such as castor oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, mineral oil, olive oil and petrolatum are used in the manufacture of lipsticks. However, castor oil is the most common ingredient as it forms a shiny film after drying that does not smudge easily. Many lipsticks also offer aloevera, amino acids, collagen, moisturizers, vitamin E and sunscreen to keep your lips soft, moist and protected from the weather conditions.

9 Lipstick Tips

  1. Lip liner should match the lipstick – Oh no you didn’t use black lip liner with pink lipstick! For a natural look, be sure to find a lipliner shade closely matching your lipstick.
  2. Always keep a lip brush handy – Lip brushes help to give a smooth lips and also assist in getting the last bit of lipstick out of the tube.
  3. Getting down to the wire? Mix with a little Vaseline – If you only have a little bit of lipstick left in the tube and it’s not easy to get out, get your lip brush and mix in with petroleum jelly to create a gloss.
  4. Avoid glossy colors if you’re over 40- Creamier colors make women over 40 look more natural and younger. Plus older lips need more moisture.
  5. “Orange” shades make teeth look yellow – Not too many women can pull off an orange shade anyway.
  6. Don’t like that shade of lipstick? Try it as a blush – A color not working on lips might do well on cheeks. A little dab will do you though, too much and you’ll look clownish.
  7. Still Don’t like the shade? Try blending with other shades – There’s nothing worse than buying a shade of lipstick, taking it home and finding out it looks awful. If you don’t like a particular shade, try blending with other colors for a more suitable match.
  8. Lipsticks last longer when stored in the refrigerator – I’m sure my husband would love it if I started storing makeup in the fridge, but yeah, it works.
  9. Keep your lipstick color lasting
You may put a dab of foundation on your lips before applying lipstick. But some people don't really like the gloppy look of lip color resulted. A sheer swipe of eyelid primer is preferred instead to keep your lipstick staying on longer. You may neutralize your natural lip color with a a small amount of base prior to your lipstick application too. Natural and contemporary look of lips is expected.
