Legend behind Hartalika Teej

According to legend, this day celebrates the union ceremony of Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvati. While he really loved her, he didn't know she existed. He fasted and prayed hard for years in the Himalayas to impress her. His efforts were noticed and his dedication appreciated. Shiva realized the extent of her love and married her. It is believed that the goddess gave birth to one hundred and eight children before she met Shiva. Therefore, on this day, the idol of the goddess is dressed in bright and beautiful colors and there is a procession where the idol is seated in a palanquin. Some devotees also worship the idol of Lord Shiva. The idols are usually made of sand and clay. In some states like Rajasthan, this procession includes animals like elephants and camels. During the Hartalika Teej prayer, sweets, powdered rice and flowers along with coins are offered as holy offerings. The holy katha tells the story of all women or single priests. In this narrative, all women focus on the well-being of their husbands - their husbands. Apart from prayer, women give special importance to 'shringar' or make-up. They try hard to look beautiful by wearing new clothes, wearing jewelry and adorning themselves with bangles and mehendi on their hands. They also wear a bindi on their forehead. The idol of Parvati is similarly dressed. The fast is usually broken after the woman has taken a bath and finished the evening prayer. This practice marks the end of this sacred time, which is done wholeheartedly in India.
