Teej Festival - Teej is one of the most sacred Hindu festivals found in India. It can be seen in different parts of the country that women seek blessings for the life of their husbands. Teej honors the devotion of Ma Parvati who did penance for years to become Shiva's wife. Women seek their blessings for a happy married life and unmarried girls fast to get an exemplary husband like Shiva. Hartalika Teej festival is celebrated with fervor in many parts of northern India. It generally involves holy fasting, traditional prayer rituals, joyful dancing, singing, and swinging. Women of all ages gather to seek the blessings of Goddess Parvati. During the festival of Teej, like teej hartalika dresses, green is one of the most popular colors. Women also decorate their hands and feet with henna. The wonderful monsoon season is the sign of several celebrations and the holy Teej is one of them. Women choose ethnic wear like lehengas or anarkali dresses.

Types of Teej Festival

There are three types of Teej celebrated in India. These are Haryali Teej, Hartalika Teej and Kajri Teej. The Hariyali Teejalso known as 'Chhoti Teej' is held on Shravana. This is followed by Kajari Teej also known as 'Badi Teej', held after fifteen days of Hariyali Teej. The third type of Teej, Haritalika Teej falls in the month of 'Bhado' and is held almost a month after Haryali Teej. Although the customs may differ in each state, the reason that unites women in all states is to seek the blessings of marital happiness and the life of their husbands.

How is this holiday celebrated?

Women who celebrate this festival fast for a peaceful and happy married life. They also pray for the happiness of their husbands and families. The other two Teejs, Haryali Teej, and Kajari Teej are celebrated by women visiting their parents' houses. However, Hartalika Teej was celebrated when they returned to her in-laws' house. Most people wake up early on the day of this festival and wear new clothes, mostly saris. They also wear the best jewelry they own and receive many gifts from their parents and in-laws. The gifts are known by various names like Shrinjhara or Sindhare and include bangles, clothes, sindoor, etc. Many women also take care of the Hartalika Pooja and they gather near the temple or in the garden. The idol of Goddess Parvati is placed in one place and surrounded by women around her. They offer sweets, flowers and fruits, and the story of Teej Katha is narrated.

Legend behind Hartalika Teej

According to legend, this day celebrates the union ceremony of Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvati. While he really loved her, he didn't know she existed. He fasted and prayed hard for years in the Himalayas to impress her. His efforts were noticed and his dedication appreciated. Shiva realized the extent of her love and married her. It is believed that the goddess gave birth to one hundred and eight children before she met Shiva. Therefore, on this day, the idol of the goddess is dressed in bright and beautiful colors and there is a procession where the idol is seated in a palanquin. Some devotees also worship the idol of Lord Shiva. The idols are usually made of sand and clay. In some states like Rajasthan, this procession includes animals like elephants and camels. During the Hartalika Teej prayer, sweets, powdered rice and flowers along with coins are offered as holy offerings. The holy katha tells the story of all women or single priests. In this narrative, all women focus on the well-being of their husbands - their husbands. Apart from prayer, women give special importance to 'shringar' or make-up. They try hard to look beautiful by wearing new clothes, wearing jewelry and adorning themselves with bangles and mehendi on their hands. They also wear a bindi on their forehead. The idol of Parvati is similarly dressed. The fast is usually broken after the woman has taken a bath and finished the evening prayer. This practice marks the end of this sacred time, which is done wholeheartedly in India.
